LOVEFIELD
After shots of the field to show the setting, there is a LS of a crow on a sign. This is a typical code for horror or thriller films as they represent death. This is emphasised by diegetic sound of a creaking sign.
Money, a handbag and phone are spilled on the floor, which again, along with the ambient and non-diegetic sound, create enigma of something that isn’t quite right. There is also a CU of someone kicking her dirty foot, with a woman screaming and crying to create even more enigma and therefore make the audience feel more tense. A sound bridge of the phone ringing is used to emphasise the phone on the floor – it makes the audience think that whoever owns the phone is in danger.
Non -
diegetic sound accompanies someone stabbing a dagger into the ground, which
comes as a shock (emphasised by the sound.) More high pitched non – diegetic
sound introduces us back to the crow – building up more tension.
The
camera starts to pan up to a new character, which therefore instantly creates
suspicion. His hand is bloody which adds to this.
The
man’s tattoo comes with a stereotype that he isn’t someone to be trusted:
especially with the skull one.
He
runs to his car and collects a blanket, when he reaches what we first thought
was the scene of the crime, the music stops and the lighting gets brighter as
we’re introduced to a new born baby.
The
short film concludes with a happy ending (emphasised by cheerful non – diegetic
sound) as an ambulance finally arrives.
Through
all the enigma codes, non – diegetic and diegetic sound, camera shots and lighting
at the beginning, we get the impression that this short film is a horror. The
whole way though it follows a linear pattern which helps build up tension and
surprise when it turns out to be a happy ending.
