SILENT THINGS - Ailsa

SILENT THINGS

The film starts with a long, high angle shot of someone on the beach. This makes this person look alone and vulnerable to the audience.

As well as ambient sound, when we are shown the kite there is a slight sound of aeroplanes. I think that one reason for this could be that it represents this person’s dreams, and creates sympathy because this is as far as the character will get to them. It presents something less than the real thing.

This LS shows how focused the characters are on the kite, this is unusual for people their age and shows how secluded they are due to their disabilities.

After a shot - reverse - shot sequence of the other two characters, the girl that has a disability comes back onto the beach. Quiet, eerie sound is used to highlight her isolation.

She questions their friendship, and ends up being ignored so walks away. This two person shot emphasises her importance compared to the other two people. The audience may feel sympathy for her because she doesn’t understand social situations due to the strength of her disability.

This CU shows his facial expression – the struggle he has to do anything with the disability he has.

The same shot type of different people is shown to compare them to the characters. It shows that he can’t lead a normal life.

The music starts to go eerie, just like it does for the girl with the disability as he starts to panic. His body language shows how much he isn’t coping and he has no control over his own body.

At the end of this short film, we are back to being shown these two characters on the beach. This shows that other people will always find it difficult to understand them and all they have is each other.
